Padma Bushan for Dhananjayans, Padma Shri for Aruna Sairam
CHENNAI, January 26: Carnatic musician Aruna Sairam and the Bharathanatyam dance couple V.P. Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan have been honoured with the prestigious Padma Award by the Government of India. While singer Aruna Sairam has been given the Padma Shri Award, the Dhananjayans have been jointly honoured with the Padma Bushan Award.

The Dhananjayans are disciples of legendary Rukmini Devi of Kalakshetra and have established their own Academy, Bharatakalanjali. They have received innumerable national and international awards, including the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award.

Bharatakalanjali, since its establishment in 1968, has trained a number of students, who have established themselves in different parts of the world. Bharatakalanjali has produced more than 30 dance productions.

Aruna Sairam was born in Bombay. Her mother, singer Rajalakshmi Sethuraman, was her first teacher in the art of Carnatic music. She also studied under Sangita Kalanidhi T. Brinda.

Aruna Sairam is known for her own style. She has created a large audience for Carnatic music among the European listeners through her concerts.
