Indira Sivasailam Endowment Medal for
T.M. Krishna
CHENNAI, August 25: Carnatic vocalist T. M. Krishna has been chosen for the fifth Indira Sivasailam Endowment Medal and Concert.

The fifth Indira Sivasailam Endowment Concert will be held at The Music Academy here on September 25 during the Navaratri season.

The artist is selected by a panel comprising members from the Endowments Committee of The Music Academy and Smt. Mallika Srinivasan (Chairman - TAFE Limited), daughter of late A. Sivasailam (Former Chairman - Amalgamations Limited) and late Indira Sivasailam.

Indira Sivasailam had a deep-rooted conviction that South Indian classical musicians par excellence should be encouraged and recognized. This had led to her daughter Smt. Mallika Srinivasan to establish the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Fund in 2010 under the auspices of The Music Academy.

Every year, the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Fund recognizes an outstanding Carnatic musician based on an established set of criteria, which includes excellence in performance, audience appeal, adherence to classical tradition while innovating within its framework, depth of knowledge and demonstrated efforts to disseminate knowledge and the ability to bring about a greater and deeper public appreciation of Carnatic music.

A musician with radical thought, Krishna has come under intense public glare ever since he penned his book "A Southern Music: The Karnatic Story’’. He has consistently courted controversy with his no-holds-barred articulation of views on very many subjects ranging from music to politics and society.

"Sri. T. M. Krishna, who describes himself quite simply as “a singer”, occupies a distinct place in the sphere of Carnatic music for the stunning individuality of his renditions. Trained by distinguished gurus, Sri B. Seetharama Sarma and Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Sri T. M. Krishna has a firm footing in tradition, without being owned by it. Singing with a musical veracity that goes back to centuries, he presents a musical imagination that unfolds in the present. Among one of the most widely travelled musicians, Sri Krishna has reinforced the Carnatic musical legacy among its cognoscenti, and also introduced its magnificence to new audiences across continents,’’ says a release.

The Indira Sivasailam Foundation was established by Smt. Mallika Srinivasan in the memory of her mother, whose deep-rooted convicting was to uphold and promote India’s rich heritage by preserving and propagating its various art forms. The foundation instituted the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Fund in association with The Music Academy, Madras, and organizes a memorial concert during the Navaratri season every year, recognizing an outstanding Carnatic musician with The Indira Sivasailam Endowment Medal and citation. Since 2010, renowned musicians such as Smt. Sudha Ragunathan, Sri. Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Smt. Aruna Sairam and Smt. Bombay Jayashri Ramnath have been conferred this honor.
