A no-frill concert by Vijay Shiva
CHENNAI, December 18: Considering his superior musical knowledge, Vijay Shiva has not been given his due by the media in its columns. Of late, however, his singing has been drawing a large fan following for him. A no non-sense practitioner of Carnatic music, Vijay Shiva is a sincere no-frill artiste. He gave an inspiring concert for Brahma Gana Sabha on December 14, 2010 at Sivagami Petachi Auditorium. His singing that evening was expressive, especially so when he rendered many popular and rare Tamil kritis. “Sabapatikku” (Abhogi) of Gopalakrishna Bharathi brought out the best in Vijay Shiva. Mela raga Gamanashrama was treated to an in-depth elaboration. Not wanting to keep the audience in suspense for long, he announced the name of the raga and went on to render a Mysore Vasudevacharya kriti “Idi Niku Nyayama Sri Rama”. The listening was enjoyable, as he weaved a garland of sparkling swaras and did a niraval at “Varijadhala Netra Varida Niba Gatra ”. Violinist Charulatha Ramanujam played with lot of enthusiasm. She gave just the requisite support to the vocalist. Vijay Shiva was all absorbed in music. He went on to provide rich music that evening. He seemed totally oblivious to the atmosphere, though the hall was almost full with appreciative audience. He went about his task religiously, churning out some excellent kritis. “Sri Kamalambikayam” came as welcome surprise after a lovely exposition of Sahana. This is among Dikshitar’s Navavaranams on Tiruvarur temple. Vijay Shiva was devotion-personified, as he rendered the kriti. The diction was absolutely clear. As he improvised Kiravani, the audience appeared to relish the rakthi mela raga. The exposition received loud claps from the audience. This Thyagaraja kriti “Kaligiyunte” was made famous by late M.S. Subbulakshmi and was so nice to hear. Vijay Shiva packed this composition with neraval and swaras at “Baguga Sriraghuramuni Padamula”. He conducted his experiment within the boundaries of kalpitha sangeetham. He sang the fast-phased “Ramabhi Rama Manasu” (Dhanyasi) before shifting to Kamboji. Vijay Shiva brought melody to the Kamboji kriti “Kana Kann Kodi Vendum Kapali”. His clear diction made the rendering exercise a lot enjoyable. This was more especially when he improvised on “Manikkam Vairam Mudal Navarathanabharanamum”. It was a good neraval. The tani avarthanam played by Manoj Shiva and Kanjira artiste Purushotham was a long one. Both seasoned artistes played with vigour. Then came the tukkada part with light classical songs such as “Punkuyil Kuvum”(Kapi) of Kalki Krishnamurthy and “Tannaiarindinbamura Vennilave”(Maand) of Ramalinga Swamigal. A riveting “Tiruvazhi Tirushankam Thiruvananthan Garudan” song on Ranganatha and Ranganayaki Nachiyar of Srirangam( Kurinji) in lali-style(Unjal style) left a lasting impression on the rasikas.
